New design is CPU intensive to render....

Operating System is Debian Linux 4.0, Browser is Iceweasel 2.0.0.15 (basically, rebranded firefox). I have 768Mb memory (I know that's not a lot), and CPU is an Athlon 64 X2 4000+

Could lack of memory be an issue? I don't see why it should be, but that's the biggest bottleneck on this box.

LOL, old Pentium 1.5 Ghz here, 256Mb RAM, WinXP SP2, Opera 9.51 - and it's still working okay (20% CPU with foobar working and profile opened). IE 6.0+Avast still has some problems with missing elements though, so i use Opera for last.fm exclusively ;-)

Like Babs_05 said, "the site has always been hungry". I actually find it less "hungry" now, though I don't know if that's because of the new version or because I switched browser.

Yeah, I found the old last.fm to be incredibly frustrating in regards to the demands it placed on the CPU. The new one doesn't demand any more than any other website.
    Except...
In Opera 9.51 at least, the Library is REALLY slow... To the point of being unusable.
  • Last.fm performance

    UBuntu 8.04
    AMD Athlon64 X2 dual core 4600+ (2.4 ghz)
    2 gig RAM
    Firefox 3.0

Every so often Firefox will go up between 18-22% on the profile page. (According to top) Memory usage is at 300 megs (profile + 2 forum tabs open)

I think it's the flash player, too. All those flash objects slow the thing to a crawl. It's just like bad myspace pages.. flash makes the machine crawl. Even a fast one!

I'm using Firefox 2.0.0.16 on Windows XP.

I noticed that the memory footprint of Firefox gradually gets bigger the longer I browse last.fm:

When things start to slow down, I just restart Firefox and it's back to normal, but this didn't happen before so maybe there's a clue here.

    same problem for my FF.

Actually, that's pretty typical of the Firefox memory leak problem that's been around since version 1. You probably don't see it as pronounced on typically less "interactive" websites than last.fm, but that problem's been there and documented for at least a couple of years now. It's been mitigated a bit as new versions of Firefox have come out, but it still exists.

  • Interesting. My profile page often jumps up to 5% and 8% usage on my 3GHz Core 2 duo on FF3 on Vista 64. That's a lot. I don't notice it, but it's huge suckage for a seemingly static page.

By comparison, my home page registers 0-2%. This thread shows mostly 0%, jumping at odd times up to 1%, and rarely 2%.
What part of that did I understand?

I have noticed that "My Library" page tends to freeze in Opera quite a lot when clicking on a particular letter. Also, why on earth do you have three Ajax requests at once when loading new page? Each takes at least 1.5s to complete, not to mention buggy Prototype which is most likely the cause of all that freezing...

And just found out that forum search "works" via Google - wasn't able to find a post I made earlier as Google probably hasn't "scrobbled" the forum yet.

This site is a complete disaster.

Firefox 2 users please note that FF2 was often caching everything, few leaks here and there. It is advisable to switch to FF3 as soon as possible.

This is clearly a poor technical implementation. Website is not doing anything sophisticated except replacing HTML content using Ajax calls and remembering few variables in order to navigate properly.

Opera seems to not play that nicely with Ajax calls - Facebook often causes the browser to lock for a few seconds for me. Don't think you can really blame this on the site...
  • Ad-blocking the flash player here, and there is barely any CPU usage on my profile. And I'm using several Greasemonkey scripts. The flash player is evil, as beta testers said all along.

I wouldn't know about Facebook as I was happy here (until the revamp, of course). I have used Opera 9.5 for testing of my Ajax-heavy web apps and it plays nicely. But then, I use jQuery, not prototype. Library doesn't behave very well in Firefox 3 either so there is a reason for my statement. CPU usage goes to 100% for a few secs while library gets updated.
  • On both of our macbooks here we regularly get a message saying "A script being executed by Adobe Flash 9 is running slowly, should be abort it?" or something to that effect. It seems to happen mostly when navigating to or away from a page...

I have a little bit of an older version of microsoft office at work, on a Dell (don't know which model it is) on a WAN and at home I'd been using firefox (just updated the other day) on a Dell Optiplex GX240, with a Comcast broadban modem.

On both the site has run very slow. Every single time I go to another page it takes at least a minute to load; even for non picture and non flasher player intensive pages such as these forum pages.

Yet today, on the same home computer I'm using IE (don't know what number, the properties don't say) and things are loading with only a few seconds pause. I don't know if it's because of what I'm using, or just because it's a different day. I guess I could load up the firefox and see if it's moving any faster today.

googlesyndication ads have been slowing my downloads since they switched to the new layout - I had to enable adblock again and remove them to get somewhere with this.

Oh, forgot to mention that it's explore on that work computer.

I have Comcast at home also, and the site's been loading perfectly quickly for me, in fact much faster than it used to on the old last.fm interface. Then again, I use the Flashblock extension on Firefox and have been blocking Google syndication ad stuff and Google Analytics for a long time, since both are dog slow and kill all website loading times.
