DeVotchKa is a four piece multi-instrumental and vocal ensemble that fuses Romani, Greek, Slavic, and Bolero, music with American punk and folk roots. They take their name from Anthony Burgess’ Nadsat (the self created language of ‘A Clockwork Orange’s main character, Alex) word for “young girl,” which is itself derived from the Russian word devochka(девочка) of the same meaning. Based in Denver, Colorado, the quartet is made up of Nick Urata, who sings and plays theremin, guitar, bouzouki, piano, and trumpet; Tom Hagerman, who plays violin, accordion, and piano; Jeanie Schroder, who sings and plays sousaphone and double bass; and Shawn King, who plays percussion and trumpet.
Originally they were a backing band for burlesque shows. In their early years, DeVotchKa also toured with fetish model, Dita von Teese. Numerous nationwide tours in support of self released records earned the band an underground following. Their song “How It Ends” was featured on the trailer for the film “Everything Is Illuminated”, introducing the band to a widening audience. Their performance at the 2006 Bonnaroo music festival was considered a breakout event. In between tours, the band was picked by first time film directors Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris to score “Little Miss Sunshine”, a 2006 film that would go on to garner four Academy Award nominations.

It's always great to see a new wave of fans.... first there were those who heard "How it Ends" for the "Everything is Illuminated" trailer. They were followed by those who heard them in "Little Miss Sunshine". Now "Gears of War 2" has brought them further exposure. Nothing like spreading great music and earning new fans!

I never really hear that big a similarity between Beirut and DeVotchKa. I like Beirut but I find that a lot of their songs sound the same whereas these guys have such a rich sound. I heard the Gears of War advert in a packed cinema. It really is quite strange to hear a song I love played in front of a big audience...one half of me starts to feel strongly possessive!?! and then the other half thinks that advert doesn't do it justice because it mixes the structure up. Then I realise that 99 of folk are just waiting for the damn film to start and pay a nary a concern to the music in the adverts!! Here in Northern Ireland I haven't yet met anyone who has heard of Devothka!

It isn't updated here but they are playing a few shows in Europe. I was told and saw (forget where) that they are playing in Dublin and in Glasgow (my two nearest places) next April so I can only assume there will be a good deal more venues on the list.
