Mostly stuff like this was known as New Wave back then, yeah, only college stations being the place to listen via radio.

the term "alternative", was first used in the early eighty's for all non- mainstream music. No one used the term "postpunk", until years later in hindsight. Originally, you could only listen to Echo on smaller market or college radio stations. Punk, synth, doom and gloom, whatever, were all played together. Corporate music/radio used the term as amarketing ploy to reach college kids then they bought up the smaller stations.

this is being tagged as 'alternative'? um, alternative music (c. 1990s) was so coined because it was an alternative to the mainstream traditional rock and pop on the radio at the time. this album is not alternative to ANYthing, but rather firmly rooted in the postpunk movement.
