Kind of Blue est considéré comme la meilleure vente d’album de Jazz de tous les temps. C’est surtout l'œuvre majeure de Miles Davis : elle aura beaucoup d’influence sur la musique jazz, mais aussi sur le rock (source d'inspiration pour les Pink Floyd, par exemple). De nombreux morceaux (à commencer par So What) sont emblématiques du jeu modal de Miles Davis à cette époque, c'est-à-dire à contre-courant de l'interprétation usuelle tonale où la mélodie s'articule autour de phrases — de « phrasés » — et de résolutions. Cet album est donc caractéristique du jazz modal.
