Nightwish is a band, formed in the town of Kitee, Finland in 1996. The band currently consists of Anette Olzon (vocals), Tuomas Holopainen (keyboards), Marco Hietala (bass, vocals), Emppu Vuorinen (guitars), and Jukka Nevalainen (drums and percussion).

The vocalist on all albums prior to 2005 was Tarja Turunen.

Anette Olzon (ex-Alyson Avenue) joined the band for their most recent album Dark Passion Play and the corresponding World Tour.



The band’s leader, keyboardist Tuomas Holopainen, composes songs that are often classified as either or ; their musical style has also been described as a symphonic metal variant, called .
Nevertheless, Nightwish is considered one of the main developers of the genre, which encompasses similar bands such as Within Temptation, Therion, Epica, Sonata Arctica, Edenbridge, Lunatica, and Visions of Atlantis.

The original idea of Nightwish was largely inspired by The Gathering, and the idea was to use keyboards, acoustic guitars and the operatic vocals of their then singer Tarja Turunen. This idea was changed in 1997, as a drummer was added, and the acoustic guitar was replaced by an electric guitar.

The idea of using operatic vocals was changed dramatically with their third album Wishmaster (2000), and more so on future albums, especially Dark Passion Play (2007). In 2001, Holopainen asked Sami Vänskä, their bassist since 1998, to leave, and he was replaced with Marco Hietala (Tarot, ex-Sinergy), leaving Sinergy.

    Old man metal is stinky. Anette sounds good singing She Is My Sin, Sacrament of Wilderness and at times Dark Chest of Wonders . I hate her version of Wishmaster, Wish I had an Angel, Slaying the Dreamer, The Siren and Sleeping Sun. I really don't care for her poor interpretations of Nemo and Ever Dream. Conclusion Anette should stick with mostly her old songs and maybe some Oceanborn and Wishmaster songs because she adds a nice touch too the songs she has covered. They should play Escapist live.

    The narrow minded remark wasn't directed at anyone in particular. I'm just tired of these 'Urgh, Anette is/sounds like a pop singer', type comments. There are quite a few decent 'pop' singers, so it's a real tedious insult. For me, Anette has a classic 80s rock style of voice, and whose to say that fits in any less with a Symphonic metal band then an classical trained voice. Also if you are going to make posts whining about Anette ruining 'Tarja's songs', expect people to point out to you that there are four other members. And on the topic of Black Sabbath, Dio >> Ozzy, replacements ftw

    Lulz I have heard most of DPP and I do not like what I have heard one bit. I heard Amaranth and thought "oh fuck this is shit but heck this is the single better check out the rest of the album" oh god how i should of just left it there. Heard several other songs and sounded just as uninspired and poppy as Amaranth did. Anette is shit but DPP could of actually been passable if got someone else to do vocals. I admit some bits of the album sound good then Anettes vocals come in and it actually pains me in how good this band used to be e.g The Kinslayer, Wishmaster and how shit they have become.

    Lol, Tuomas has always been a juge fan of Pirates of the Carribean movies (and Hans Zimmer work for the OST). I think it's kinda funny, if you don't take it seriously (the Jack Sparrow on his keyboards haha). As for The Siren sounding sexy... Well, I don't really care but Anette's version appeals more to me (the lyrics kinda deal with "sex" in a way). It's just.. I don't know, Anette is better for the oriental vocals IMO =).
