Sidsel Endresen (born June 19, 1952) is a Norwegian jazz singer. She is one of those creative vocal artists who are extremely difficult to describe properly.
For the last decade both Sidsel Endresen and Christian Wallumrød have been at the forefront of the contemporary Norwegian music scene as performers, composers and bandleaders. Their collaboration started in 2002. Outside of their improvising duo work they have collaborated in Endresen’s commissioned piece for Bergen Jazzfestival 2002: “Living Rooms” and in her current “Undertow”-project with Jan Bang.
Their first duo release “Merriwinkle” (Jazzland/Universal) presents improvised and highly contemporary version of the classical duo format, in addition to several tracks featuring sound wizard Helge Sten (alias Deathprod). Sten also appears as co-producer on the album.
Although the music is completely improvised, it does not really fall within the established categories of improvised music.
Sidsel Endresen understands the importance of words, Christian Wallumrød the importance of space. Jon Bang adds electronic landscape .
Sidsel Endresen’s music often has some electronic backing, some jazz elements, some folk elements, some non-mainstream-pop elements, and an experimental flavour but doesn’t fall into the styles of music usually called experimental. She has a deep, haunting voice and she sings music full of ripples of sound, connotation, and allusion.
