The New Pornographers - Mass Romantic

    Holidays.

They're for running around, sea spray in your face, flying your stunt kite on the flat wet sand, trying not to let the kite come to a halt by hitting a yappy dog on the bonce. Woof woof ouch!

They're for trying out all the ice-cream flavours in the van, one a day for every day of the holiday, with chocolate flakes, strawberry sauce and sprinkles. Especially sprinkles.

    They're for shopping.

Okay, not toilet roll shopping (although needs must occasionally). I meant record shopping. Yeah, I'm that music-loving fellow who always has to find the local record vendor wherever I go. This year, I came across a market stall selling second-hand vinyl. I bought albums by The Monochrome Set and the Scars; seven-inch singles by Holly & The Italians and The Higsons. Result: 4-0!

Three years ago I found a dusty cramped shop full of treasure. The sort of treasure I like best. A CD by The Detroit Cobras, which had me dancing around the kitchen, arms, legs and hair akimbo; and Mass Romantic by The New Pornographers. A never-to-be-forgotten day.

As soon as I played the New Pornos' CD for the first time, I was hooked, reeled in, stuffed with apples and griddled to within an inch of my life. I swear I could hear colours. Insane, tumbling pop tunes. Like watching a five-cheese pizza spinning round and round above my head. The most colourful, cheesy pizza that ever existed, with glittery olives and pink, sparkly pepper. Mmmm...

  • Ways of improving my eclectic score and OMI?

    3 Nov 2008, 16:11 by Pitchfork4ever

So I've taken a few of these tests that are supposed to show how open-minded you are. The tests are cool, but the results were kind of poor. The reason why I'm writing this journal is in hope that some of you users can help me improve these scores. I think it looks really cool in the profile when someone has a high score, and I wanna show the world how open-minded I am. I want to be able to tell people I have eclectic preferences and hence know a lot about music.

First I took the eclectic and super eclectic tests:
    My eclectic score is currently
    94/100

    My super-eclectic score is currently
    684/1000

I've seen guys with 98 / >800 on these, so I need people to recommend me music that is NOT similar to the artists in my charts. Preferably linked to a review.

Then I tried the Open Mind Index:

Here I think I need some recommendations of bands with weird tags. However, they must NOT be similar to the artists in my top 50 or else my eclectic score will drop! Please post a link to a review of an album by the artist together with the recommendation!

Here are the artists you don't recommend me:
...And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead, Acid Mothers Temple & The Melting Paraiso U.F.O., Akron/Family, Animal Collective, Aphex Twin, Ariel Pink's Haunted Graffiti (2), Atlas Sound, Autechre, Avey Tare & Kría Brekkan, Avey Tare and Panda Bear, Beck, Black Dice, Bon Iver, Bonnie 'Prince' Billy, Boris, Boris with Merzbow, Boris with Michio Kurihara, Built to Spill, Ciccone Youth, Coil, Coldplay, Death Cab for Cutie, Death in June, Der Blutharsch, Destroyer, Dinosaur Jr., Earth, Familjen, Fuck Buttons, GZA/Genius, Ghostface, Grandaddy, Grizzly Bear (3), Honey is Cool, Hot Chip, Jeff Mangum, Jonny Greenwood, Karl Blau, Ladytron, Liars, Little Wings, Melt-Banana, Menomena, Mercury Rev, Method Man, Midnight Juggernauts, Modest Mouse, Mount Eerie, Muse, My Bloody Valentine, My Morning Jacket, Nature and Organisation, No Age, OM, OOIOO, On a Friday, Panda Bear (2), Pavement, Pixies, Plaid, Pnau, RZA, Raekwon, Ruins, Röyksopp, Smog, Sol Invictus, Squarepusher, Stephen Malkmus, Sun Kil Moon, Sunn O))), Ted Leo and The Pharmacists, Thanksgiving, The Decemberists, The Dodos, The Flaming Lips, The Future Sound of London, The Mountain Goats, The New Pornographers, The Olivia Tremor Control, The Presets, The Shins, The Walkmen (2), Thom Yorke, Thurston Moore, Ugly Casanova, Van She, Voxtrot, Wilco, Woelv, Wolf Parade, Zeigeist, of Montreal (2)

    1. How did you get into 29?

Kevin Devine. i went to see Northstar's last show (really just nick and tyler acoustic, pre-cassino having a name) on long island summer of 2005, and straylight run was headlining. this kid with a guitar sang a song about the war and the draft and blew my mind, and i've been into his stuff ever since.

    2. What was the first song you ever heard by 22?

Northstar. i think "For Members Only."

    3. How many albums by 13 do you own?

Good Old War. just the one, Only Way to be Alone.

    4. What is your favorite song by 15?

Wolf Parade. oooooh, tough one. either "Grounds for Divorce" or "I'll Believe in Anything." and maybe "Bang Your Drum." depends on my mood.

    5. What is your favorite song by 5?

Margot & the Nuclear So and So's. "Skeleton Key," hands down. that song is about my life.

    6. Is there a song by 6 that makes you happy?

Paramore. a bunch of songs off Riot. they're so fun.

    7. What is your favorite song by 10?

    Arcade Fire. "Intervention." absolutely.

    8. What is a good memory you have involving 30?

Say Anything. honestly, not much anymore. they remind me of my ex and i only listen to that record when i'm really angry.

    9. Is there a song by 19 that makes you happy?

Jack's Mannequin. "I'm Ready." not only is it a great song, but "my life has become a boring pop song and everyone's singing along" is kind of my life.

    10. How many times have you seen 25 live?

    Gatsby's American Dream. 2 or 3 times, i can't remember. i think just 2.

    11. What is the first song you ever heard by 23?

The Starting Line. probably "Up & Go." someone told one of my exes that he looked like "the kid from the starting line" and he ended up buying the record one day and put it on while we were in the car.

    12. What is your favorite album by 11?

My Favorite Highway. How to Call a Bluff. the EP's okay, but i prefer the full-length.

    13. Who is a favorite member of 1?

So Many Dynamos. picking favorite members is so 12yearsold, but i'd have to say ryan. his writing is brilliant and hilarious.

    14. Have you ever seen 14 live?

Death Cab for Cutie. yes, finally. once. about a month ago.

    15. What is a good memory involving 27?

Cassino. again, not much because they remind me of a very dark time in my life, and also of my ex. he's taken so many bands and songs away from me.

    16. What is your favorite song by 16?

We Are Scientists. "After Hours." that song makes me so happy.

    17. What is your favorite album by 18?

Minus the Bear. it was Highly Refined Pirates, but i can't listen to it at all anymore for the same reason why i don't really listen to Cassino or Say Anything anymore. Basically I can't listen to anything that reminds me of 2005 or 2006. Thanks.

    18. What is your favorite song by 21?

Sara Bareilles. "Vegas." it reminds me of driving around in my car with lauren and singing really really loud.

    19. What is the first song you ever heard by 26?

Hellogoodbye. i actually have no idea. so i'm just gonna say "Shimmy Shimmy Quarter Turn." that sounds about right.

    20. What is your favorite album by 2?

Bound Stems. Appreciation Night is fantastic, but i have some not-so-pleasant memories attached to it. i really do love The Family Afloat even if it also reminds me of the same person who makes the other one almost unlistenable sometimes.

    21. What is you favorite song by 3?

Forever the Sickest Kids. hahahaha. oh god. um, probably "Breakdown," or "Whoa Oh." they're all so fun, it's hard to choose.

    22. What is your favorite song by 8?

Bright Eyes. "First Day of My Life."

    23. How many times have you seen 17 live?

    Vampire Weekend. never. boo.

    24. What is the worst song by 12?

1997. i really dislike their 2nd record, so i'll just say anything off that. A Better View of the Rising Moon is all golden, though.

    25. What was the first song you ever heard by 25?

Gatsby's American Dream. i have no idea, honestly.

    26. What is you favorite album by 7?

BEDlight for blueEYES. Life on Life's Terms, obv.

    27. What is your favorite song by 24?

Fall Out Boy. there's a couple. "My Heart is the Worst Kind of Weapon," "Hum Hallelujah," "Yule Shoot Your Eye Out," i'm sure there's more.

    28. Is there a song by 9 that makes you happy?

Panic at the Disco. the entire new record, namely "Nine in the Afternoon" and "When the Day Met the Night."

    29. What is your favorite album by 4?

Mayday Parade. A Lesson in Romantics is fantastic.

    30. How many albums do you own by 20?

The New Pornographers. just Twin Cinema and Electric Version. i know, i know.
