@MSTRKRFTWRK: Yeah, but when I say that Double Nickels's a rip-off of Pink Flag, I was referring to the concept (relatively short songs on both of them)...

The Brian Eno comparison is dead on. It's the use of synths and atmosphere within the punk (and perhaps also pop) context - and the subsequent experimentation in dynamic and texture - that made these guys amazing.

Dude, have you heard Double Nickles on the Dime by Minutemen. Basically, they're Wire and Wire is Minutemen.

Well, I'd say the world of Chairs Missing is in the same galaxy as Brian Eno's first couple of albums, with its clever production and inventive, nuanced songcraft. Anyways, yeah, their first three are all masterpieces, though I'm not sure if I have a favorite (right now I think I'm leaning toward 154). A Bell Is A Cup... is also really good. That period of their work seems pretty neglected. I still need to hear The Ideal Copy and a lot of the newer stuff...

I wouldn't even say Wire are like any of those bands either, Platypope. They exist in a world all of their own, particularly on Chairs Missing.

I don't think of Wire being like Joy Division at all. Think of them as virtually the same band as the Fall, Minuteman, and the Clash. All of whom are great.

Yeah, I guess 154 has a lot of atmosphere, and Chairs Missing to a lesser extent. But Pink Flag gets by on pure songwriting.

154 has serious "atmosphere." If you think about it, anything you play that changes the mood of the room has atmosphere. Wire has always done that for me.

This band would have a lot more plays if Field Day For The Sundays was, like, a second longer.

I wouldn't really say they create much of an atmosphere. Astounding songwriting, though.

It's really annoying going to all these artists that sprouted up around the same time/before/after Joy Division and having wankers come and pretend that these artists are lesser than JD. Joy Division is for the people who are just stepping into that genre for the first time because one of their main-stream music friends suggested it to them. 2 or 3 good songs is all they really have, for anyone else who has a member of the JD group tell your friends to take Ian Curtis off of that musical cross and to put a better artist up there/

Yeah, they don't really care about playing their more well-known stuff. Sort of disappointing, but if I were in a band for 30 years, I would not want to play the same 15 songs over and over again. Also, it's not their fault that most people are only familiar with Pink Flag and maybe Chairs missing.

Just went and saw them live at The Fillmore. The show was a bit of a disappointment. Apparently they don't care much about playing their best stuff, and the sound was pretty bad. The only one of my favorite songs that they DID play was 12XU - but you could barely recognize it. Perhaps the true reason that they didn't ever gain huge commercial success.

To Subhuman1016, I've seen them twice this year, in the period since Object 47 was on the cards, and both times they played 12XU, Lowdown and Pink Flag, as well as Being Sucked in Again and The 15th. Boiling Boy as well at the first gig. Had I any complaint, it would be the sets were very similar, but on the whole I was pretty pleased with selection, considering I as well had heard they only played new material, with maybe a Pink Flag encore.

I've seen them maybe seven times. They always play the current release music, and MAYBE one chestnut. The first time I saw them they brought a cover band named The Ex Lion Tamers who played all their earlier music to open the show. Brilliant! Wouldn't mind more of that. I have never met anyone who did not thoroughly enjoy seeing Wire Live. Nope.
