This is an AMAZING album; very underrated by most of the fans. By now, while I'm typing this shout, it is only 7th most listened album here on Last.FM, losing even to Falling Into Infinity (which is not a bad album, but it's not their best either) in number of listeners. I have to admit that I learned to value this album only in the last few years. It aged very well, although the track "The Great Debate" dated. And the 42 minutes long (split into eight songs) title track is just EPIC!

OK, fuck it, this is their best album and it isn't even close. I would've given the nod to SFAM, Awake, or Train of Thought for most of my life but now that I've really listened to the lyrics of the title track it's by far the best and most personally affecting thing they've ever written. The rest of the album is great too, although The Great Debate quickly became dated lyrically.

Anyway, I always kinda liked this album but I never listened to it a ton. It's starting to creep up into my favorites. As for disc 1 vs. disc 2, I can't say...

I wonder what it would have been like the album has been released as just the song. Maybe the first disc would have been released separately like opeth's deliverance/damnation, or if the next album had been some strange mix of the Six Degrees disc 1 and Train of Thought we got, etc. I just think it would have been nice as a straight up new-oldschool prog album, just 42 minutes long. I feel like the compact disc really hurt prog by letting it get too out of hand. Not everysingleminute of space needs to be used up, let alone across multiple discs (lookin' at u The Flower Kings). Images and Words clocks in at 57 minutes, and not a single one wasted. It's still my favorite by far and I could easily trim 10-20 off of every other album they've released... except this one, which I think is done pretty well, and note that both discs are under an hour long.

If i had to remove anything, it would be Disappear, and then the first disc would fit perfectly onto a record! I just like envisioning this as an old school double album (same with ayreon's latest).

Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence === way, way better than anything they released until now. Maybe Octavarium gets close. IMHO, their best still is Metropolis Part 2: Scenes from a Memory, together with Images & Words.

Words cannot describe how meaningful this album is to me. I feel it is an honest, skilled and devoted work with significant contributions from all members. It is one of my favourite albums for many reasons, I love it on several different levels. However, Images & Words is still by far my favourite DT, I shouldn't need to explain why. <3 Just thought I'd share my thoughts on this album, it is far too criticised and I just wanted to keep the peace.
