Would never understand Tom g being embarrassed of this band idk if he still thinks that but hopefully not cause hellhamer was really influential in the 80"s and 90"s and who cares if it's just venom "worship" it still fucking bangs

Yes, they are hugely influential. Quite impressive for a band that only lasted two years.

so they've been playing again for the past 5 or so years. when will these cowards release a goddamn live record so we can listen to these old-ass songs in a fashion that doesn't make our ears bleed?

Not to be that guy but I think if it was well-produced it would be lame as fuck. You get adjusted to raw recordings really fast if you listen to them and learn to appreciate the production a lot more. Modern production takes away a lot for me if they had their songs produced like cattle decap that would take a lot away.

Hellhammer live these days doesn't sound like Cattle Decap, it just sounds like Celtic Frost

Who said anything about production? It's the playing that's the issue. I like plenty of shit with garbage production, as long as the music is played at least somewhat competently.

Idk if im biased as a guitar player but i prefer the Hellhammer sound over the Celtic Frost sound sometimes. I like that caveman sound! imo Buried and Forgotten is just as good as Necromantical Screams and its pretty much the blueprint sound for most of Darkthrones releases so maybe youre just not into that type of production?

Deathspell Omega and Darkthrone are my two most scrobbled black metal bands, so uh... I'd say I'm pretty into the sound. The first two Celtic Frost albums are very cavemany too.

Difference is that Celtic Frost is competently played. So is all of Darkthrones material. Shit production is not an issue for me at all, that's all about whether it supports the music or not. But I've never heard music that was better because it was played badly. Sloppily, sure. Most hardcore and punk benefits from some sloppiness. Some black metal does too. But I find Hellhammer so sloppy the music becomes unenjoyable. I have the exact same issue with Deathcrush. Luckily we're getting the live albums so that's something for me defintely (funnily enough Mayhem also just released a live album with a bunch of Deathcrush material, and I find it so much better in its current state than the original EP)

Hellhammer and Celtic Frost literally recorded in the same year. Sure CF had a slightly better drummer for the recording. But Stephen Priestly also played in Hellhammer. Plus Tom didnt magically become a better guitar player overnight he plays pretty much the same with the exact same tone. The difference IS the sound! i could start getting into recording techniques, mixing and stuff but that doesnt make a whole lot of sense if youre not a musician. If youre interested go find one of Toms Books theyre pretty interesting and go in great detail on how both HH and CF recordings went down. The recordings for Morbid Tales (same year as Hellhammer) were almost canceled because the recording technician basically thought their drummer was incompetent. Probably took him forever to record those drums. Check this demo https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JrgyCstjcUw difference between those drum recordings is probably a year of practicing d-beats and kick patterns.

Triumph of death sounded awful. I really hope I can change my mind if I listen to it again.

Tom could have started a hip hop group from the beginning instead of waiting until 2002

crazy to think they were active for only 2 years and singlehandedly did more for extreme metal than most bands ever did. also sounded like this between 1982 and 1984. crazy

Anyone else thinking Apocalyptic Raids is overall boring compared to the demos ? Especially Satanic Rites ? I just can't stand the re-recordings, it's just too slow, too clean, it lacks what made Hellhammer awesome. Messiah sounds like shit on it, where it's a pure blast of filth on Satanic Rites.
