I rly don't get it why ppl rank this as their worst record (or the "less better"). I instantly loved it and it's my second favorite ISIS album, only behind the almighty Wavering Radiants.

This is their least immediate record to me, which is perhaps why it is their lowest rated. I thought of it that way for some time until this moment. Now I don't know where I'd place it, if that's even important. Regardless, they took a lot of left turns on this one and I think it really paid off. Some of the moments here are just incredibly interesting and beautiful. Aaron's vocals are much more powerful than on preceding records. I basically like everything about except the snare drum sound. They only manage to fix that on the last LP though haha.

This may not be overall the strongest Isis album, but it's still really solid and has some of the band's best work, especially "Dulcinea". Complaining about this album is roughly like complaining that Magical Mystery Tour isn't as strong as Sgt. Pepper's and Revolver. No, it isn't, but you're losing perspective by focusing on that rather than on how the band's output compares to the output of nearly everyone else who ever performed similar styles of music.

This is one of my favorites. Not sure why the band themselves and others seem so critical of it.

In the absence of truth is solid as a rock and a great release but it's the weakest IMO of all Isis' albums.

ISIS themselves are way too critical on this release. Despite recording troubles, this was executed beautifully and brilliantly

While ill always prefer the oppressive sludge dominance of their older records, I still have a soft spot for this record. Very transcendent, while still remaining somber in the right moments.

Probably my favorite ISIS album to some degree, however Holy Tears has just annoyed me so much by now. It's like "Diet Weight" and I'm pretty sure it was on every live setlist of the band in their last four years.

I dont think people think this is a bad album, they just say it's the weakest Isis album, and it says a lot about a band when their weakest album is still a pinnacle of the genre. But it's still a unique production, and a fantastic, mind-blowing album - 'Over Root and Thorn', then the coupling of 'All out of Time, All Into Space' and 'Holy Tears' is just pure genius. First album I heard by them, some 4 years ago or so, still amazing on every listen.

The production on this album works quite well in my opinion. In an interview with Aaron Turner I was reading he did mention however that the album was good apart from production which he didn't seem satisfied with, and I see that reflected in some shouts. I do understand where that's coming from - it's the weirdest production job out of all of Isis' records in my opinion - but I think it just helps blend the aesthetic of the album together nicely. Instrumentation, concept, album art, everything.
