“Dying in LA” describes the struggles of someone who came to Los Angeles to pursue their dreams, but ended up unsuccessful. It shows how many are captivated by the glamour and opportunities of the city when they first enter, only to be slowly broken down over time. It paints the picture of a person slowly losing hope and becoming who they promised they would never be in the city of (broken) dreams.

“Dying in LA” paints a darker picture of the City of Angels than the previous Panic! song “LA Devotee”, which Brendon Urie described as his love letter to the city.

The sudden sadness of the track is in stark juxtaposition with the upbeat nature of the album. On the Zach Sang Show, Urie explained his love of ending on a somber ballad.

"I think I like just to have that juxtapos. You need that contrast, at least I do. Whe every song is so high energy, when is a danceable one, I liked ending a little morose, a little sad."

Brendon revealed a few brief descriptions about songs on the album several months before its release. He alluded to the instrumentation and title of “Dying in L.A.,” saying:

"This one is piano with some strings poppin’. It’s just really pretty. A really somber metaphorically dying song."

The sound of birds chirping can be heard at the end of the track. Long-time friend of Urie and road manager, Zack Cloud Hall, stated on twitter that the bird sounds were recorded outside Urie’s home studio.

Brendon revealed on the Zach Sang Show that LA is a place he could see himself living forever.

"You know, Dying in LA, man, hopefully. Hopefully, I’m here ‘til then. I love it out here. It’s the best and worst place in the world. It can be your saving grace or your total downfall. It’s such a cool area. There’s so much going on here, so many amazing people."
