Opted to let my first few spins of this album serve as an alternate OST of sorts for my current playthrough of Subnautica. I guess I should've figured a band called "The Ocean" would be able to play nicely alongside a game about deep sea exploration, but it's still a bit shocking how well this album captures the same combination of unease, mystery, and wonder as one of my favorite games ever made. Would definitely recommend if you're looking for a new way to enhance the experience of either piece of media!

This album proves the genious of Robin Staps and the whole band. The Ocean really is a genius band. The Ocean is always trying out something new. One thing that sets them apart from many other bands is the fact that they have never made a bad album. Their earlier stuff is excellent. Even though they are very different from this release. Take 'Precambrian' for example. A truly genius album. Or Antropocentric/Heliocentric. Truly amazing releases. I just saw them live a week ago and the concert was just incredible!

This is chiller than I was expecting but it has all of the rich textures and atmosphere I could ever hope for. Lovely. Need to listen to more of these guys.

They took a risk trying something new here and I believe it paid off. Great record - very mature sounding.

Kinda nuts to see people bitching about this album when it's really not a departure at all from their last two records except a few more atmospheric bits and a more electronic feel in places.

It has less metal in it and electronic/atmospheric passages take the front seat. Even Phanerozoic II, being the most similar album to Holocene, had a mammoth of a song as Jurassic | Cretaceus spanning to 1/4 of the album's length, and in general, it had more aggressive songs. That being said, this new album is unsurprisingly great. I guess it's just that uneducated ears don't like experimentation that much.
