2023 mix gives the album so much space to breathe and truly sound great. I don't how to describe it

i gotta admit – i found out about this band in middle school, when i read azerrad. took a listen; didn’t stick. i’ve given them a serious go again a few times over the years and while i don’t dislike any of their music, it still hasn’t really clicked or grabbed me. the unusual story behind tim and a *10* from pitchfork was enough to bring me back to it (even if that review flat-out sucked)…and again, it’s by no means bad, but i’m just not hearing it. even if you’re an aficionado for this type of post-costello ‘80s rock, how can this album possibly be anything above an 8? it’s super pleasant. could be very nice in the car on a windows down kind of day…but idk man. what the fuck?

okay okay – i just chased the remix with tim as it was originally released, and ironically enough…that helped me understand the appeal a lot more lol. i get why longtime fans would have a desire to hear a “proper” mix, and why after decades of yearning it would feel cathartic to finally get that experience. but like a lot of the spot-produced SST stuff, the original mix sounds “wrong” in a way that’s really evocative and compelling. the album has way more character this way, and it winds up helping the songs shine more even while it tricks you into thinking it’s the opposite. the idea that this is a legendary *perfect* album is still alien to me, but i’d give the original mix an 8.5 – maybe a bit higher – and the new one a flat 8.

It's heart on your sleeve, college rock/punk rock. Objectively it's nothing special, the music will not blow you away. It has a charm in Westerberg's songwriting and their sloppy, drunken bar rock style that you get or you don't really understand. Don't get bogged down in a numerical score. Listen to the music, the lyrics, realize it's filled with fucking awesome songs and rock out.

well hey, i'm with you there – if i say an album's an 8.5, i mean it's very very good. i've just been eluded by the whole hagiography and the "basically as good as the beatles" esteem so many people have held for decades now. but i do enjoy the drunken master style for sure, and i get the overall feel of what you're saying. i'll spend some more time with the original mix because that definitely grabbed me much more than the redo did

yeah I've listened to the new mix twice and I don't think I like it as much as the OG mix. Tim is a classic mid-80s, very tinny sounding punk album. But I think it fits those songs better than if they had more space and room to breathe with better production. I like the new mix a decent amount because I like the songs, but the OG is better. People also hated the sound of Don't Tell a Soul because it sounded over-produced and dated, but I fucking love that crisp late-80s production. The later reissue with new mix of that album "Dead Man's Pop" cleans it up again. The Replacements are unique because they've always been rough around the edges but the songwriting is top notch.

Resterberg was a mispronunciation of his name in an interview + one of his solo albums

the dead man pop mixes are crazy good. paul's hankering to be a legit pop song writer really came true in that re-release but still had that edge the replacements are known for compared to that clean garbage of dont tell a soul

It's such a shame the course Bob Stinson's life took. That man was way too talented for things to end the way they did. <3 love ya Bob.

Одна из важнейших групп 80-ых. Не зря многие меломаны США тех лет называют Пола Вестерберга "нашим Диланом". Жаль, что с такими песнями, как "Unsatisfied", "Androgynous", "Kiss Me on the Bus", "Alex Chilton", "Achin' to Be", "When It Began", "I'll Be You" группа осталась крайне недооценённой.

Can anyone recc songs with the same vibe as Can't Hardly Wait? That soft rock with horns and sentimental lyrics DOES it for me

Very similar sound trajectory to Husker Du. Hardcore --> punk stuff --> "college rock" --> pop

Got into these guys just under a year ago, and they're one of my favorite bands of all time. Nothing like picking up a cassette of 'Let It Be', after hearing a friend talk about them for years, and being hooked from the start.

Some of the most important songs from my musical journey came from the pen of Paul Westerberg. Energetic, exuberant & emotional, The Replacements were everything I needed as a cocky, awkward and angry teenager. Many years down the road, the music has revealed extra layers that other bands that were part of my youth lacked. They’re still fresh to my ears even after every word, chord and cymbal crash has long since fused with my DNA. They don’t sound 1980s. At all. Even when the polish got dumped on ‘em pretty heavy during the second half of the decade. The Replacements remain this eternal kind of force, that has only gained power and emotional resonance with age, both theirs and with mine as a fan. To the casual observer, they’re just hardcore, snotty, garage punk. To folks like me, they’re a once in a lifetime kinda deal.

Funny thing, the rise in popularity of Androgynous. Written that long ago and still it's not fully accepted.
