My favorite Reed song from his VU era. Shows such vulnerability and honest weakness. A young rebel having his homosexual tendencies judged by the conservative society, him being put through bullshit conversion therapy, and still using Jesus as a symbol of hope, without following Christian dogma. This is what faith is actually about. Rest in Peace Lou ❤️

Recent comments here are more about this song being a meme or, at least, directly sarcastic but I find it extremely poetic and deep. Some of the greatest melodies are here as well.

Seems rather apt (or perhaps more ironic) for this to come up on my library radio on Good Friday. And absolutely, it's still so lovely even if the sentiment is entirely satirical.

What a song. It's like an atheist's plea. You know Lou Reed isn't praying to a real god - he's Lou Reed after all - but to the idea of a higher power. It's such wonderful stuff. [2]

I wouldn't ever expect to find this on a Velvet Underground album. Lou's vocals in the louder parts of the song are great.

The simplicity and space it holds while remaining an earful throughout. It'll make you relax, that's for sure.

I find it funny some people think this song isn't mere poetry. Lou Reed is at the very least agnostic.
